Name: Gregory L. Linton, Ph.D.

Title:  Professor of New Testament

Year Started: 2006

 

Background: Dr. Linton grew up in New Richmond, IN, a small town located between Lafayette and Crawfordsville, which was the filming location of the movie Hoosiers. His father owned and managed the grain elevator in New Richmond. He had three brothers and two sisters. He was baptized a week before his twelfth birthday. He attended New Richmond Christian Church. He graduated from North Montgomery High School in 1978.

Personal Information: He was born on February 6, 1960. He married his wife Kim in 1989. Kim worked as a commercial interior designer for seventeen years, but she now works in JBC’s Development Office as Public Relations Secretary. Their son Benjamin was born in 2004.
 
Education:  He graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Bible and Preaching from Johnson Bible College in Knoxville, TN, in 1982. He received a Master of Divinity from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, in December 1985. He received a Ph.D. in New Testament and Christian Origins from Duke University in Durham, NC, in 1993. His dissertation was entitled "Intertextuality in the Revelation to John." In December 2007, he completed a Master of Arts in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan.

Ministry Experience:  He has twelve years of experience in the ministry as a senior minister, youth minister, and church planter in Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Virginia.  His most recent ministry was with Woodbridge Christian Church in Woodbridge, VA.

Teaching Experience: While he was a seminary student, he taught one year at the College of the Scriptures in Louisville, KY. He taught at Shaw University Divinity School's extension campus in High Point, NC, for two years as Adjunct Professor of New Testament. He taught New Testament at Great Lakes Christian College in Lansing, MI, from 1999 to 2006. From 2003 to 2006, he served as Vice President of Academic Affairs. He has been Professor of New Testament at JBC since 2006. He teaches ¾ of his time in undergraduate classes and ¼ time online in the MA in New Testament program.

Academic Interests and Experience: His specialties are the Book of Revelation, eschatology, house churches in early Christianity, and Pauline theology. He is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and the American Schools of Oriental Research. He has participated two summers in the Karak Resources Project as a co-director of the Regional Survey Team that examined archaeological sites on the Karak Plateau of Jordan. He has published several articles in both popular and academic journals and books. He has also written entries for Dictionary of the Old Testament: Historical Books, New Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible, and Encyclopedia of Time.

Interests and Hobbies: Dr. Linton’s interests include classical music, classic movies, birdwatching, stargazing, NASCAR, genealogical research, colonial history, and Civil War history. He is a fan of Duke University and Purdue University.
