Chapter 5 - Academic Programs

Every student who graduates from Johnson Bible College with a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree majors in Bible. In addition, six professional programs require a second major. Six other professional programs require a major in Bible and minor in a professional ministry area.

The Bible major covers the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. The Biblical Studies Division forms the base of the curriculum and constitutes an essential body of knowledge without which one cannot adequately satisfy the questions of his own life nor minister to the needs of others. This position is based upon the conviction that the Bible is the objective Word of God given to mankind.

The General Studies Division introduces students to the issues that have captured the attention and creativity of humans over the ages as well as those that have formed the worldviews that dominate contemporary culture. To be an educated person assumes the breadth of knowledge and depth of perspective that comes from general studies. The general education division of the curriculum includes language, history, literature, science, psychology, music, philosophy, social psychology, religions, ethics, and physical education. In the context of Biblical and general studies, students may come to understand themselves and the world in which they minister.

The third division of the academic program, the Professional Studies Division, consists of a number of professional courses with the purpose of preparing students for entry into a chosen field of ministry. Students may select a minor in one of the following professional areas: children's ministry, children's ministry with preschool/day care director emphasis, media communications, missions, teaching English to speakers of other languages, and youth ministry. Double major degrees are offered in Bible and counseling, Bible and preaching and Church Leadership, Bible and interdisciplinary major with a focus on teacher education*, Bible and church music, Bible, music, and worship ministry, and Bible and preaching/youth ministry.

The programs of study that lead to the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science degrees are designed to prepare students for ministry upon graduation. The Bachelor of Arts provides the best preparation for seminary or graduate school. Associate of Science degree, Associate of Arts degree, Christian Service Certificate, and other certificates are available.

The interdisciplinary double major described in Chapter 8, Teacher Education, is available to any student who meets the initial qualifications. Course layouts and descriptions may be found in that chapter. Students interested in this program should see their advisors, the teacher education coordinator, or the academic dean.

In addition to the programs in this catalog, Johnson Bible College offers three Master's Degrees and an adult degree completion program. For information on these programs contact the following by mail, telephone, or E-mail Bachelor of Science in Leadership and Ministry Preparation (Dr. Vernon Eaton, LAMP@jbc.edu.); Master of Arts in Bible and Educational Technology (Dr. Chris Templar, ctemplar@jbc.edu); Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy/Professional Counseling (Dr. Rick Townsend, rtownsend@jbc.edu); Master of Arts in New Testament (Dr. John Ketchen, jketchen@jbc.edu.)

A student should be enrolled in a certificate program and when all requirements are met, he or she will be mailed the certificate.
