The purpose of the Teacher Education Department is to educate students in a Christian environment to be excellent Christian teachers who can implement an integrated Christian worldview in Christian, mission, and public schools.

The Teacher Education Department seeks to follow the example of Jesus Christ, the perfect teacher. We note that Jesus taught people in different ways to meet their individual needs, learning styles, and backgrounds (for example the contrast in teaching styles between the woman at the well and Nicodemus). Jesus served as a mentor to His disciples. He challenged them to make life-changing choices, so that they would be transformed into His image. In order to follow this pattern, the Teacher Education Department has adopted a Christian holistic educational philosophy. This philosophy follows Christ's example of addressing the needs of the whole person by integrating the spiritual, moral, physical, affective, and cognitive dimensions. The holistic, integrative, and interdisciplinary nature of the department rests on this Biblical foundation.

Bachelor's Degrees are offered in several licensure areas. These degrees partially meet the requirements for licensure in the State of Tennessee. The clinical practice and research requirements are met by the internship and course work during the M.A. year.

The Master's Degree in Holistic Education is a continuation of the undergraduate program and is required for initial licensure programs. It cannot be taken as a stand-alone program, nor is it designed for students who hold a degree from another department or college. During the graduate portion of the program students undertake a professional year during which they complete college courses and complete an internship in a local Partnership School. Students will normally need five years to complete this program. All Master's Degree programs lead to a license to teach in an elementary or middle school classroom.

The Bachelor's Degrees in ESL and Preschool/Kindergarten Education lead to licenses to teach in specialized classroom settings.

The Teacher Education Department also offers Master's Degrees in Holistic Education and Bible and Educational Technology. The Master's Degree in Educational Technology is designed for licensed teachers who want to further their education and are interested in technology. For details on the M.A. in Bible and Educational Technology, please contact the Teacher Education graduate office.

All of our Johnson Bible College teacher education graduates, who are seeking teaching jobs, experience great success in obtaining teaching positions in public and private schools in Tennessee, neighboring states and around the world.
