Course DescriptionsCongregational Development and Leadership Equipping (PRMN 4011). This advanced course considers how to develop congregations that are both biblically faithful and culturally relevant, and how to equip individuals and groups toward the fulfillment of congregational mission, vision and values. The course adopts a system's model for managing the complex interrelationship between a congregation, its immediate surroundings, the community and the culture at large. Particular attention will be given to the unique dynamics of small to medium-size congregations. (prerequisite: PRMN 4042) 3 credits Homiletics II (PRMN 3233). This course is a continuation of Homiletics I. The primary focus of this class is inductive or narrative models. Various inductive sermon models will be reviewed. Significant emphasis will be given to Biblical exegesis. This class will communicate a theology of preaching and a worldview. Preaching will be taught within the context of pastoral ministry. Relational dimensions of ministry will be emphasized with a view toward a "Christian" style of leadership both in and out of the pulpit. Practice preaching is a part of this class as well. (prerequisite: PRMN 2122) 3 credits Homiletics III (PRMN 4031). This course emphasizes the Old Testament as a rich source of guidance for the church. The course argues for the theological unity of the Bible and therefore the "preachability" of the Old Testament. Since the Old Testament contains enormous diversity of literary genres, this class will teach students methods of preparing sermons from each of these literary styles. Throughout the semester students will write and preach several sermons. This is a writing course. (prerequisites: PRMN 2122, PRMN 3233) 3 credits Managing Conflict and Change in Ministry (PRMN 4042). An advanced course with three major components: (1) How to conduct congregational change and transition in non-destructive ways that contribute to congregational health and development; (2) How to manage and resolve the inevitable conflict in churches due to change or the lack thereof. Particular attention will be given to the unique dynamics of small to medium size congregations, and (3) how to form, utilize, motivate and evaluate teamwork within the various groups in a congregation. (prerequisite: PRMN 2022) 3 credits Ministry Relationships and Communication Skills (PRMN 2022). This will be an in-depth skills-building course in active listening and healthy self-expression as needed for pastoral care, team building, group participation, meeting facilitation and interpersonal conflict resolution. Class is conducted in a communications laboratory format where skills are taught, practiced and evaluated by facilitator and peers. Guided assessments will be administered to help students understand their present tendencies and know how to expand and adapt their repertoire of skills to be effective communicators in a variety of settings. 3 credits Pastoral Counseling (PRMN 4022). This course is designed as an overview of specific counseling situations faced in ministry. An integration of psychology and theology will also be a part of the class. Theory and practical application will be integrated in such a way as to assist the student in developing a "style of counseling." Some role play situations will be included in the class. (prerequisite: PRMN 2022) 3 credits Pastoral Ministry (PRMN 3022). This course has a two-pronged thrust. The first focuses on day-to-day responsibilities of the pastoral ministry (performing weddings, funerals, baptisms, etc.) along with an underlying core theology. The second prong is "reflective-practice." Here students take actual situations and apply skills learned in an effort to assess strengths and/or struggles, develop accountable relationships, and grow toward maturity in ministry. (prerequisite: PRMN 2022) 3 credits Preaching Internship (PRMN 3300, PRMN 3312). Internships provide opportunities for students to put into practice what they have learned in the classroom under the guidance of an experienced field mentor. Interns usually serve on the staff of a church or parachurch organization for approximately ten weeks during the summer after their junior year. Students on the preaching program have the option of either a three-credit, ten-week summer internship (PRMN 3300); or a twelve-credit, six-month extended internship that takes place from January to June of the student's junior year (PRMN 3312). Students who choose the six-month option will not take Pastoral Ministries (PRMN 3022), Selected Pauline Epistles (BIBL 314_), or Effectiveness in Leadership in Life (PRMN 4014) on campus as they would otherwise. Instead the objectives of these three classes would be accomplished through assignments and experiences required on the internship. Students whose life circumstances make it difficult to complete a full-time internship may choose a "non-traditional" approach where they piece together three one-credit internship electives. This non-traditional approach must include one Mentored Ministry Experience (PRMN 2011), and any two of the following: Group Internship (PRMN 3000), Hospital Internship (PRMN 3101), Hospice Internship (PRMN 3105), Weekend Ministry Internship (PRMN 3500), and/or Clinical Setting Internship (PRMN 3205). 3 or 12.5 credits |
